Bishop Arts District: A Guest's Guide

Dallas's most walkable, most independent neighborhood — and home to our three studios. Here's how to spend a day (or a week) in it.

Why stay in Bishop Arts

Bishop Arts sits in North Oak Cliff, just across the Trinity River from Downtown Dallas. It grew out of a 1920s streetcar district, and it still feels that way: low brick storefronts, murals, patios, and blocks made for wandering. Nearly everything is independent — restaurants, galleries, bookshops, boutiques — which makes it a different trip from staying in a downtown hotel corridor. You're seven minutes from the city center, but evenings here are front porches and patio lights, not traffic.

Eat and drink

The core blocks around Bishop Avenue and Davis Street hold most of the action, all within a five-minute walk of our studios. A few long-standing favorites guests keep coming back to (hours shift — check before you go):

• Emporium Pies — the neighborhood's most famous dessert stop; expect a line on weekends, worth it.
• Lockhart Smokehouse — central-Texas-style barbecue over a Kreuz Market lineage; no forks needed.
• Eno's Pizza Tavern — thin-crust pizza in a century-old storefront, a reliable dinner anchor.
• The Wild Detectives — bookstore, bar, and backyard in a converted house; readings and live music many nights.
• Davis Street Espresso — the neighborhood's serious coffee room, an easy morning walk with a laptop.

Beyond the staples, the district turns over new patios, taquerias, and wine bars constantly — half the fun is picking a block and browsing.

A car is easy here — our building includes a free gated parking garage — and the Dallas Streetcar links the neighborhood to Union Station downtown if you'd rather skip driving.
